Assistant Director of Bands

Matt Garrett is originally from the DFW area and graduated from Poteet High School in Mesquite, TX, where his band director was Scott Coulson. Upon graduation, Matt attended Texas Tech University where he studied with James Suddath, Keith Bearden, Dr. Robert Wazel and was a member of the "Goin' Band From Raiderland" as well as numerous concert ensembles. After graduating with a B.A. in Music Education, Matt began his teaching career at Mesquite High School in Mesquite, TX, where he taught for four years. In 2004 Matt enrolled in graduate school at TCU where he served as a Graduate Assistant while earning his M.M. in Instrumental Conducting. At TCU Matt studied with Bobby Francis, Brian Youngblood, James McNair, and Gary Whitman. While attending TCU, Matt also worked with the marching band at James Bowie High School in Arlington, TX, and was a member of the Visual Staff for the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps from 2005-2007.

After graduation from TCU in 2006, Matt moved to Mansfield High School in Mansfield, TX, where he directed and designed for the award winning marching band and color guard programs in addition to directing various concert ensembles. In 2012 Matt was appointed Director of Bands at Lake Ridge High School in Mansfield, TX, where he built one of the leading programs in the state. In 2013, only the second year of existence for the school, the Lake Ridge Marching Band won the Area B Marching Contest and qualified for the Texas State Marching Band Contest where they advanced into Finals becoming one of the youngest bands ever to do so.

Matt also has a very extensive background in color guard design and instruction. For 12 years he served as the director and designer for the Ars Nova independent Winter Guard organization, a consistent finalist at Winter Guard International World Championships. Additionally, both the Mansfield High School and Lake Ridge High School Winter Guard programs enjoyed much growth and success under his direction, with the Mansfield program winning multiple championships and achieving Finalist status at World Championships.

For numerous years Matt served as an instructor for the Texas Adjudicators Association (TMAA) where he presented training to marching band judges on the topics of marching fundamentals, visual performance, and show design. Matt has presented numerous in-service workshops on contemporary Marching Band concepts and is a very active drill designer, clinician, and adjudicator all over the state of Texas.

Matt currently lives in Fort Worth, TX, with his lovely wife Leslie who is a band director's daughter. In fact, Matt is the fourth band director in the family, so family gatherings are always educational! They have two fluffy cats who rule the house. Matt is also an avid runner who runs with the Fort Worth Running Company and just ran the 2015 Boston Marathon.
