SEAN ATKINSON

Theory/Composition

Prior to joining the faculty at TCU, Sean Atkinson served on the music faculty at the University of Texas-Arlington. He earned both the MM and PhD degrees in music theory from Florida State University and holds a BM in music theory and trombone performance from Furman University. While attending Florida State, Sean was nominated for the university-wide Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award.

Sean is an active researcher in the field of music theory, with publications in Music Theory Online, The Dutch Journal of Music Theory, College Music Symposium, and Indiana Theory Review. He has presented at numerous regional, national, and international conferences as well, including the Texas Society for Music Theory, Music Theory Southeast, the Semiotic Society of America, and the International Conference on Music Semiotics in Honor of Raymond Monelle. His research primarily explores the connections between music and other domains in multimedia, which broadly includes contemporary film, opera, and other staged works. He is currently working on a book which develops a model for analyzing multimedia compositions.

Sean is currently the chair of the Networking/IT Committee for the Society for Music Theory and serves on the advisory board for Mosaic, the graduate music journal for the University of Buffalo (SUNY).
