Audition RequirEments FOR MUSIC MAJORS

for Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Guitar, and Harp Majors and Minors. Applicants: please note that applications cannot be completed without uploading a video file.

Audition requirements for Violin:

  • UNDERGRADUATE (BM, BME, BA)

    • First or last movement of a standard concerto, with cadenza if applicable
    • One movement of unaccompanied Bach
    • One other contrasting selection
    • Applicants applying for a Music Minor or non-major study in strings must audition. Please contact Dr. Elisabeth Adkins to request details about audition requirements.

    MASTER’S & ARTIST DIPLOMA

    • First or last movement of a standard concerto, with cadenza if applicable
    • Two movements of unaccompanied Bach
    • One other contrasting selection

    DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS
    Pre-Screening Repertoire

    • First or last movement of a standard concerto, with cadenza if applicable
    • One movement of unaccompanied Bach
    • One other contrasting selection

    Live Audition Repertoire
    A recital program displaying a variety of styles and genres, including but not limited to:

    • 2 movements of unaccompanied Bach
    • 2 contrasting movements from a standard concerto
    • A movement from a sonata for violin and piano
    • Orchestral excerpts may be included

    • Two contrasting movements from a work for viola solo or two contrasting etudes or caprices

    DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS

    Live Audition Repertoire
    A recital program displaying a variety of styles and genres, including but not limited to:

    • A work for viola solo, such as by Bach, Hindemith, Reger, Uhl, etc.
    • A complete concerto
    • A caprice and/or a short show piece

Audition Requirements for Cello:

For all degree programs, please send your current repertoire list and music resume directly to Dr. Castro-Balbi, in addition to the other application requirements.

Pre-screening videos should be uploaded with your online application. Should you encounter issues with this process, please send a link to your video posting (e.g. on youtube, dropbox or similar service) to Dr. Castro-Balbi at j.castro-balbi@tcu.edu. Do not send recordings via email, only send the links.

Undergraduate (BM, BME, BA)

  • A Prelude from any suite by J. S. Bach
  • The first movement of a concerto
  • A work showing virtuosity, such as an etude, a caprice, or a showpiece
  • Applicants applying for a Music Minor or non-major study in strings must audition. Please contact Dr. Jesús Castro-Balbi to request details about audition requirements.

  • The Prelude and one dance from Suites No. 3, 4, 5, or 6 by J. S. Bach

You will be notified if you are invited to the live audition.

Live Audition Repertoire
A recital program displaying a variety of styles and genres, including but not limited to:

  • The Prelude and one dance from Suites No. 3, 4, 5, or 6 by J. S. Bach
  • A complete standard concerto
  • A work showing virtuosity such as an etude, a caprice, or a showpiece
  • A work written after 1900

Undergraduate (BM, BME, BA)

  • One movement from a standard sonata or concerto or comparable works for the standard double bass solo repertoire
  • Two orchestra excerpts from the standard orchestral repertoire
  • Applicants applying for a Music Minor or non-major study in strings must audition. Please contact Prof Yuan Lu to request details about audition requirements.

Master’s

  • One movement from a standard sonata or concerto or comparable works for the standard double bass solo repertoire
  • A double bass solo of your choice that reflects a diversity of style from the first selection
  • Three orchestra excerpts from the standard orchestral repertoire

Artist Diploma

  • One movement from a standard sonata or concerto or comparable works for the standard double bass solo repertoire
  • A movement from the Bach cello suites or a virtuoso piece of your choice
  • Three orchestra excerpts from the standard orchestral repertoire

DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS
Pre-Screening Repertoire

  • One movement from a standard sonata or concerto or comparable works for the standard double bass solo repertoire
  • A double bass solo of your choice that reflects a diversity of style from the first selection

Undergraduate Audition Requirements For Guitar:

Undergraduate (BM, BME, BA)
A performance from memory of three works from contrasting musical style periods, including as follows:

  • Etudes by Aguado, Carcassi, Guiliani, or Sor (Segovia edition)
  • Minor works by Milan, Bach, Tarrega, or Brouwer
  • Applicants applying for a Music Minor or non-major study in strings must audition. Please contact Mr. Chip Christ to request details about audition requirements.

GRADUATE
A performance from memory of three works from contrasting musical style periods, including as follows:

  • Etudes by Aguado, Carcassi, Guiliani, or Sor (Segovia edition)
  • Minor works by Milan, Bach, Tarrega, or Brouwer

Undergraduate Audition Requirements For Harp:

Undergraduate (BM, BME, BA)

  • Three solo works of differing styles from standard harp literature, including but not limited to works of Grandjany, Salzedo, Renie, Hasselmans and Tournier that best represent the student's current level of performance. Selections should demonstrate technical proficiency and musicianship. Memorization is encouraged but not required. A major cadenza from orchestral repertoire (such as Tchaikovsky Waltz of the Flowers, Rimsky-Korsakov Capriccio Espagnol or Britten Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra) may be substituted for one of the solos.
  • Applicants applying for a Music Minor or non-major study in strings must audition. Please contact Dr. Laura Logan Brandenburg to request details about audition requirements.

GRADUATE

  • Two solo works of contrasting styles from standard harp literature, including but not limited to works of Grandjany, Salzedo, Renie and Tournier that best represent the student's current level of performance. Selections should demonstrate technical proficiency and musicianship. Memorization is required.
  • One movement of a standard solo harp concerto, such as Gliere, Ginastera, Boieldieu, or Debussy, performed from memory, or a single movement work, such as Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro or Pierne’s Concertstuck.

Audition Requirements FOR MUSIC MINORS

Strings applicants interested in minoring in music must audition on their major instrument in order to be accepted for applied music study. Please contact individual studio faculty (violin, viola, cello, bass, harp, guitar, etc.) to request details regarding the expected performance level and required audition.
